Comet Car Mascot
Model no. 1123 Comete mascot

Designed in 1925, early Lalique hood ornament, very rarely available.

This is an early and specific René Lalique bouchon de radiateur creation (the Comete was never marketed or sold as a paperweight or bookend). Incredibly complex design, no doubt with many failures in manufacturing.

This example, with wheel-cut engraved signature 'R. LALIQUE FRANCE' along the bottom toward the end of the tail, is correct in all dimensions with no chips, grinding or restoration. Mold lines and air bubbles are present as are expected from this era of production. Also as a part of production there is a straw mark which travels across the top of the nucleus of the comet. This can be felt with the fingernail (a good thing). Similar can be seen and felt along the bottom of the tail and elsewhere on the body of the tail.

The Comete is fitted in what appears to be a period mount which itself is mounted in a stylised quality constructed and hand-painted wooden base. This base was designed to house a bulb fitting and still carries a bulb. Whilst all old wiring has been removed and the fitting has not been tested for operation or safety, there is potential for the new curator of this rare Lalique mascot to bring reflected light to the Comete once again.

Length 19cm
